Toronto's In-Store Packaging Ban

Speak Out! Act Now

The City of Toronto wants to ban in-store packaging!  The issue is going to a vote as early as Dec. 1, so you must act now to oppose this plan.  Simply follow the steps below to make sure your Mayor Miller and his council hear from business owners like you.

Step 1:   Contact Mayor Miller’s office

Here’s a sample e-mail:

Dear Mayor Miller,

I am writing to ask you to reject the recommendations from the Public Works Committee that will be considered by City Council on Dec. 1st.

In-store packaging makes up less than one percent of what is currently going to landfill.  This proposal to “tax and ban,”  rather than recycle, will increase my costs at a time when profit margins are already razor-thin, and the economy is slowing.

The result will be higher prices for my customers, with no real improvement to the environment.  Toronto needs to expand recycling, not impose new taxes and bans on its businesses.

Forcing businesses like mine to provide a 10-cent discount for customers that bring their own bags amounts to an indirect tax.  The discount does not reflect the cost of packaging, and will come directly off my bottom line.

A ban on rigid plastic packaging -- including compostable and biodegradable resins – simply doesn’t make sense.  These materials are recyclable.

Instead, Toronto wants consumers to bring their own dishes for take-out food.  Food packaging keeps food fresh and prevents contamination and spoilage.  Why would the City encourage people to use food packaging that might not be clean and could present a health risk?

Please support small business operators in the City of Toronto by voting against these recommendations.
